Why is it important?

The purpose of accessibility is that people with disabilities can perceive, understand, navigate, and interact with the Web. It is essential that the website can be accessible in order to provide equal access and equal opportunity to disabled users.

The major categories of disability types are:

  • Visual: This includes blindness, low vision, colour-blindness.
  • Hearing: This includes deafness and hard-of-hearing.
  • Motor: Inability to use a mouse, slow response time, limited fine motor control
  • Cognitive: Learning disabilities, distractibility, inability to remember or focus on large amounts of information

Checklist

Text Sizes Is the text clear and easy to read with an allowance for plenty of white space?
Alt tags Do all of the images have clear descriptive ALT tags for the visually impaired? Not only that but without them they can't be found in search engines or if the email does not load the images.
Validation - (Website Only) Does the website have 100% validity?
Link Titles Do all of the links have clear titles?
Images / Videos - (Website Only) Do all the images show on the website or emails? Do all the videos show on the website? Have they got links on them? Do they work?
Use colours with care Make sure there is a good contrast in colours. If there is a design, make sure they have good colour contrasts before building the website or email.
JavaScript - (Website Only) Does all of the JavaScript functionality work?
